Grand Opening — Art Exhibition & Cultural Market

Curated by Mushi Wooseong James and presented with Christopher Chung / PDR-1 Arts Warehouse, we are pleased to invite you to the public opening of Are You Korean? / 한국분이세요, a multidisciplinary Korean American art exhibition and cultural market.

 

The question at the center of this show — Are You Korean? — is one many of us have carried in different forms: asked with curiosity, with suspicion, with affection, or as a means of exclusion. This exhibition takes that question not as a test, but as an invitation. It gathers artists whose lives and work complicate any fixed idea of what it means to belong to Korean identity, across immigration, mixed heritage, and queerness, at a moment when Korean culture has never been more visible, and belonging to it has never been more complicated. The afternoon unfolds across two floors.

 

On the ground floor, the exhibition presents work by Kris Jeyeun Chang, Michelle Favin, Michael Kang, Helen Kim, Joanne Lee, Sungjae Lee, Marco Minetti and Jun Yang.

 

On the second floor, the Korean American cultural market (시장), brings together vendors and exciting cultural offerings throughout the day. Engage with Korean tastes through a designed ‘grazing tablescape’ that includes homemade ssamjang dip and locally-sourced vegetable bounty. We hope you will take your time with the day: move between the two floors, sit with the work, eat something good, experience something new about Korean culture, and stay in conversation with the people around you.

 

This event is free and open to the public.
